‘Losing voice was the most traumatic experience of my life’
Shekhar Ravjiani, the celebrated Indian composer-singer from the duo Vishal-Shekhar, has recently opened up about the life-altering health crisis he faced two years ago when he lost his voice due to left vocal cord paresis.
In a recent media interview, describing the experience as the most traumatic of his life, Shekhar recalled, "The thought of a life without singing was terrifying. I suddenly had no voice, just air. It was deeply disturbing, and even now, the memory shakes me."
The physical toll of the condition lasted for months, but it was the mental anguish that hit hardest. "I struggled with feelings of despair. It was hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel. I had to hide my pain from my family while continuing my work," he shared.
Despite the emotional and physical challenges, Shekhar credits his recovery to his unwavering support system, including his family and Dr Erin Walsh, whom he calls his "angel." Shekhar praised Dr Walsh for her belief in his recovery and for designing a series of vocal exercises that helped restore his voice.
Reflecting on his journey, he emphasised the importance of vocal warm-ups, a lesson he learned the hard way: "Not warming up properly can cause severe harm to your voice."
