It is exactly eleven years that Pop Guru Azam Khan left us for good. On June 5, 2011, he lost his battle to cancer. The legendary musician was the pioneer of rock music in Bangladesh, who played a vital role in bringing the change in the music industry of his time. His timeless tracks are still loved by the young generation, for generating positive energy and waking one's inner voice to raise against oppression.
Born on February 28, 1950, Khan's greatest inspiration was his mother Jobeda Begum, who was also a singer. The valiant Freedom Fighter actively participated in the Mass Uprising (1969), and in the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
From being a stylish performer on stage, to creating timeless masterpieces, he will always be one of his kind when it comes about modern music. Remembering the Pop Samrat, let's look into ten of his songs.
Bangladesh
This is one of the most popular and energetic tracks by the Pop Guru, describing a tragic futility of life at a slum near the railway station. Through this track, he personified the birth and struggles of a new nation.
Ore Maleka, Ore Saleka
This track has been picturized in the 2007 Bangladeshi film, "Godfather". Composed by Emon Saha, it has been written and tuned by Azam Khan himself. The 'guru' himself appears in this song's video.
Papri Keno Bojhena
The melancholic track is amongst the list of his most popular creations, which was released from the mixed album "Char Duwari" in 1978. Azam Khan wrote this song after suffering from a heartbreak, and the pain is quite evident from his voice.
Alal O Dulal
The 1993 track was released from the album, "Live in Los Angeles". Khan appeared in the music video of the song. It was especially liked by children, and became popular in 90s birthday parties.
Ashi Ashi Bole Tumi
Another hit track by Khan, it was released during the 80s. The song was often performed by him on stage, and is considered an underrated classic by him.
Ami Jare Chaire
This soliloquy won the hearts of many people in the 70's, and a lot of relationships
Obhimani
There is no English translation for the word "Obhimani", and there simply aren't enough words to describe this beautiful song.
Chup Chup Onamika Chup
Rumours have it that the song, even though a massive hit, forced girls named Onamika to stay quiet, thanks to the constant references by their friends when it released.
Hai Allah Re
This track became a big hit in 1973. A recreation of it in the Meril-Prothom Alo stage, featuring Ayub Bachchu and Partha Barua, is still a treat to listen to.
Ei Gaan Shesh Gaan
This song was released in 2008, from the album Aushomapto-1. Fans will be able to relate this song, as the legend is no more and he will be living forever through his music, creation, and contributions towards his country.
