In a celebration of indigenous culture, the Thana Para Jyat Dal from Ruma will perform the traditional Marma folk drama "Machayng" in Bandarban on December 28 at night.

The performance, organised by the Conservatory Cell of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, will commence at 9pm and continue throughout the night.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy's Director General Syed Jamil Ahmed will be present as the chief guest at the event, which is open to all.

According to a press release from the Shilpakala Academy, 'jyat' is one of the most significant traditional cultural forms of the Marma community. Through this art form, the age-old customs and heritage of the Marmas are brought to life.

Jyat performances narrate the lives of ancient kings and rulers, as well as the daily lives, culture, and work environments of common people from those eras, weaving the tales together with rhythm, melody, and movement.

The Marma community traditionally organises these performances during religious or social events, aiming to entertain and uplift the spirits of guests in a festive atmosphere.

Special guests at the event will include Brigadier General Mohammad Mehedi Hasan, Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Shah Mujahid Uddin, Bandarban Superintendent of Police (SP) Shahidullah Kawsa, Director Nu Kraching Marma of the Cultural Institute for Small Ethnic Groups (CIS Institute), and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy's director of Theatre and Film, Faiz Zahir. Aung Sahla Marma, a member of Kuhalong Union Parishad, will also be present.

The event will be chaired by Professor Thanjama Lushai, chairman of Bandarban Hill District Council and president of the Bandarban Shilpakala Academy. The welcome speech will be delivered by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy's Deputy Director SM Shamim Akter.
