Drik Picture Library, WPP jointly announce 2023 regional winners

Today at 16:00 CEST (8:00 pm local time), World Press Photo (WPP) executive director, Joumana El Zein Khoury, 2023 Contest global jury chair Brent Lewis and the founder of regional partner, Shahidul Alam will be live on the WPP Instagram page.

They will speak about the regional winners and hold discourse on the stories that have been illustrated via the winning photos.

Based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the WPP foundation is a non-profit that works in collaboration with the Dutch Postcode Lottery and PwC.

This year, Drik Picture Library has partnered with the prestigious foundation as the regional partner of Asia. Overall, regionally, there have been 24 winners and six honourable mentions, from 60 thousand entries from over 3752 candidates, across 127 nations.

Founded by Dutch photographers in 1955, WPP has reached a prestigious benchmark for photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers worldwide. What started as an endeavour to an international audience, has now taken a broader form into one of the world's esteemed photo contests.

Drik, Bangladesh is an independent media organisation committed to challenging social inequality. Established in 1989, it specialises in art, media and communication for local and global audiences

This year's winners for the Asia region are: "Shireen Abu Akleh's Funeral" by Maya Levin, United States, Associated Press in the SINGLES category; "The Price of Peace in Afghanistan" by Mads Nissen, Denmark, Politiken/Panos Pictures in the STORIES category; "Woman, Life, Freedom" by Hossein Fatemi, Iran in the OPEN FORMAT category; and "Battered Waters" by Anush Babajanyan, Armenia, VII Agency/National Geographic Society in the LONG-TERM PROJECTS category.

Furthermore, two honourable mentions selected by the global jury include "Untitled" by Ahmad Halabisaz, Iran and "Faint Light in the Unfinished Building" by Weimin Chu, China.

The global winners of the WPP 2023 will be announced on April 20, 11 am CEST (3 pm local time).
