The Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University is set to stage a new play, "Pakhider Bidhansobha" (The Parliament of Birds), from February 7 to 10 at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). The play, written by Associate Professor Dr Shahman Moishan and directed by Professor Dr Ahmedul Kabir, draws inspiration from the classical Sufi poem "The Conference of the Birds" by Persian poet Farid-Ud-Din Attar, known as Attar of Nishapur.

The play will have five performances during the four-day run, with the first show scheduled for January 7 at 6:30pm. Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, cultural adviser to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, will attend as the chief guest of the event. The production is part of the department's academic programme and will feature 14 emerging actors.

"Pakhider Bidhansobha" explores themes of self-discovery, unity, and the search for truth, with a focus on Sufi philosophy. It mirrors contemporary issues of individualism and disconnection, portraying a collective journey for meaning and leadership. The production is supported by the Darul Irfan Research Institute, which has contributed to research and funding.

Dr Moishan highlighted that the play goes beyond spiritual exploration, incorporating elements of political commentary as well. The play's narrative reflects the struggles of marginalised and oppressed individuals and their search for collective leadership, symbolised by the birds' quest for the mythical Simurgh.

"'Pakhider Bidhansobha' is about the journey of individuals who come together in search of truth and transformation," said Dr Moishan. "It represents a call for unity in a world divided by individualism and materialism."
