Theatre Art Unit’s new play ‘Boloy’ to hit the stage this January
As the year kicks off, theatre troupe Theatre Art Unit is gearing up to stage their latest production, "Boloy" (Circle). The opening show will be held at the Experimental Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on January 24 at 7:00pm. This marks the troupe's 40th production, written and directed by Mokaddem Morshed.
The play centres around three main characters: a politician, a scientist, and a theologian. All three are accomplished in their respective fields, yet each feels an underlying dissatisfaction, a longing for freedom. They've sought out a psychologist for counselling sessions, and soon realise that they're trapped in their respective circles—suffocating, exhausted, and desperate to break free.
They yearn for a life beyond the circle. But is that truly possible? As their counselling sessions progress, their unspoken thoughts and realisations about politics, science, and religion come to the surface. They delve into a discourse of logic, counter-logic, faith, and doubt while grappling with deep emotional and intellectual conflicts. Ultimately, they return to their own identities, engaging in a conversation with themselves. Can they ever break free from the circle? Or will they surrender to a new one?
Mokaddem Morshed, the play's director, said, "There's been a shift in our political and social circles. We've transitioned from one circle to another, but the circle remains. The tension of moving from one circle to another, or being stuck within one, accumulates frustration. 'Boloy' reflects on the never-ending cycle of life within these inescapable circles."
The cast includes Mahamuda Hossain Bhabna, Nahid Sultana Lemon, Rana Sikder, Rezaul Amin Sujon, Swadhin Shah, Kamruzzaman Millat, and Selim Mahbub, among others. The lighting design is credited to Sudip Chakraborty, while actor Selim Mahbub is also in charge of the sound design.
