Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ should be celebrated: Tom Hanks
In a recent promotional interview for his new drama "Here", Hollywood veteran Tom Hanks praised "Laal Singh Chaddha", the Indian adaptation of his iconic film "Forrest Gump".
Speaking to Zoom, Hanks described the Aamir Khan-starrer as "extraordinary" and "glorious," commending its unique cultural perspective.
When asked whether he had seen Aamir Khan's adaptation, Hanks responded, "I saw that. Extraordinary. I think it's a testament to how film grows on film. There are movies that become part of our creative fabric, some fading, others remaining unforgettable. Every now and again, a film enters global consciousness and becomes inescapable."
He added that the adaptation beautifully retained "Forrest Gump's" essence while offering a fresh, cultural viewpoint. "Look at the differences, yet the similarities, despite the unique filmmakers and cultural backgrounds. Both films, in their own way, reflect the same messages, enriched by a new perspective," he said. "It was a glorious thing to behold, and I think it's something to be celebrated."
"Forrest Gump", released in 1994 and based on Winston Groom's novel, starred Hanks alongside Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, and Sally Field, with direction by Robert Zemeckis. The film won numerous accolades, becoming an enduring piece of American cinema. Notably, Zemeckis directed Hanks again in "Here", set for release later this year.
The Indian adaptation, "Laal Singh Chaddha", was produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, Jyoti Deshpande, and Ajit Andhare, with a screenplay by actor Atul Kulkarni. Directed by Advait Chandan, known for "Secret Superstar" (2017), the film reimagines "Forrest Gump" in the heart of Punjab, where Aamir Khan takes on the titular role. Kareena Kapoor stars as his love interest, a counterpart to Robin Wright's character, with supporting roles by Naga Chaitanya, Manav Vij, and Mona Singh.
