After ‘Hawa’ and ‘Poran’, no new films were hits at the theatre
After "Poran" and "Hawa", no other movies have been able to successfully do business in theatres. After the release of these two movies, many Bangla films have been released over the last three months. However, these movies did not fare well commercially at the theatres.
While some of these new movies were appreciated by the audience, they still performed poorly from a financial sense.
The movies released in the last three months include: Mustafizur Rahman Manik's "Ashirbad", Mahmud Didar's "Beauty Circus", Dipankar Dipon's "Operation Sundarban", Saidul Islam Rana's "Birotto", Shamim Ahamed Roni's "Live", Mustafizur Rahman Manik's "Jao Pakhi Bolo Tare", Ispahani Arif Jahan's "Hridita", Mizanur Rahman Mizan's "Raagi", Rafique Sikder's "Bosonto Bikel", "Rohingya", and "Jibon Pakhi", among others.
Iftekhar Uddin Noushad, owner of Madhumita Cinema Hall, gave his insight into the situation.
"After 'Poran' and 'Hawa', we have tried to run other movies, but they failed to do any business. Another movie, which ran successfully in my theatres, was 'Din-The Day'. However, no other movies fared as well in theatres as 'Hawa' and 'Poran'," said Noushad.
"We literally had to remove the movies—which were just released last week—instead, screening older movies due to audience demand. The directors have to understand the audiences' taste and make the type of movies they prefer to watch in theatres. If this trend continues, we will be in severe danger," added Noushad.
A spokesperson for Star Cineplex talked with The Daily Star anonymously, sharing their thoughts on the commercial failure of these films.
"No other movies could do well in Cineplex, apart from 'Poran' and 'Hawa'. If the movies performed well in the theatres, then we would have told you. Movies like 'Poran' and 'Hawa' are still running houseful on the weekends. So, we are waiting for more movies like these two in the future," revealed the source.
Shyamoli Cinema Hall's Ahsanullah also shared a similar message as the other two.
"After a long time, Bangladeshi cinema was prospering commercially due to movies like 'Hawa' and 'Poran'. But, after that, no new movie has been able to emulate this success. I hope that filmmakers will continue to make even better movies in the future, which the audience will love," said Ahsanullah.
