Mehazabien to make silver screen debut with ‘Priyo Maloti’ this December

Mehazabien Chowdhury is set to make her much-anticipated silver screen debut with "Priyo Maloti", directed by Shankha Dasgupta. Inspired by true events, the film explores the life of Maloti Rani Das, a woman navigating life's challenges alongside her husband, Palash Kumar Das.

The couple, belonging to a typical lower-middle-class family, leads a simple yet contented life. Their days are filled with moments of joy—celebrating their anniversary with a cake on a boat ride, taking evening walks, Palash surprising Maloti with small gifts, and their playful exchanges. However, this seemingly idyllic life takes a tragic turn when a devastating fire breaks out in a marketplace, disrupting their harmony.

Director Shankha Dasgupta shared insights about the film, saying, "The story is inspired by true events. Just as truth is often harsh, various moments in the film are equally intense and challenging. Maloti's struggles are not hers alone—they reflect the shared struggles and challenges faced by the people of this country."

Maloti's character is that of a pregnant woman who must navigate a chaotic urban environment while confronting societal norms, religious traditions, and opposition from her in-laws. "Alongside these struggles, I wanted to question whether a person's existence can be reduced to just a death certificate and an autopsy report. These themes are central to the film," Dasgupta added.

The cast of "Priyo Maloti" includes Azad Abul Kalam, Momena Chowdhury, and Somu Chowdhury, among others. The film has already garnered international attention, with screenings at the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) and the International Film Festival of India. Co-produced by Frame Per Second and the OTT platform Chorki, "Priyo Maloti" is set to release on December 20.

Meanwhile, Mehazabien's other internationally acclaimed film, "Saba," directed by Maksud Hossain, is awaiting release. Also inspired by true events, the film has been showcased at multiple festivals and is currently competing at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

"Saba" is expected to be released in Bangladesh next year.
