‘Palaan’: Kaushik Ganguly's homage to Mrinal Sen's classic 'Kharij'
Director Kaushik Ganguly has unveiled the trailer for his upcoming film "Palaan", a tribute on the legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen's birth centenary. "Palaan" not only pays homage to Mrinal Sen but also serves as Ganguly's interpretation of Sen's iconic film "Kharij".
Set in contemporary times, "Palaan" features the same characters from "Kharij", now surviving in a shabby mansion in Kolkata. The film explores themes of consciousness and guilt, inspired by Mrinal Sen's impactful cinema.
Director Kaushik Ganguly, acclaimed for his thought-provoking films on human relationships, expressed his admiration for Mrinal Sen's cinematic philosophy, citing how "Kharij" transformed his perception of cinema. Debapratim, who portrayed the character Hori in "Kharij", eagerly returns for this film, depicting Hori's life as a taxi driver in "Palaan".
Mrinal Sen's iconic film "Kharij" based on Ramapada Chowdhury's novel, revolves around a middle-class family coping with the mysterious death of their child servant, Palaan, in their kitchen. "Kharij" earned international acclaim, including the Jury Prize at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival. "Palaan" aims to captivate audiences with its fresh perspective, following Kaushik Ganguly's recent box office success with "Kaberi Antardhan".
This movie boasts an ensemble cast from the Tollywood film industry, including Anjan Dutt, Mamata Shankar, Jisshu Sengupta, Paoli Dam, Srila Majumder, Debapratim Dasgupta, and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, among others. While Anjan Dutt, Srila Majumder, and Mamata Shankar will reprise their roles, Jisshu Sengupta and Paoli Dam are notable additions.
