Russell Crowe is set to guide Henry Cavill through the world of immortals in the upcoming "Highlander" reboot. The duo is reuniting after Crowe played Superman's father in Zack Snyder's DC Universe, where Cavill starred as the Man of Steel.

The Academy Award-winning actor will take on the role of Cavill's mentor—a modern take on the character originally portrayed by Sean Connery in the 1986 cult classic. The new film is being directed by "John Wick" filmmaker Chad Stahelski, with a screenplay penned by Michael Finch, known for "John Wick: Chapter 4".

The project, backed by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, is being overseen by former Netflix film head Scott Stuber and is slated for a theatrical release.

Crowe, who rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with major roles in action epics like "Gladiator" and "Master & Commander", also received critical acclaim for his performances in "The Insider", "A Beautiful Mind", and "LA Confidential".

In recent years, he has shifted toward character roles in projects such as "Kraven the Hunter", and has headlined smaller productions like "The Pope's Exorcist" and "Sleeping Dogs".

His upcoming work includes playing Nazi leader Hermann Göring in James Vanderbilt's "Nuremberg", which will be released by Sony Pictures Classics in November. Crowe has also recently finished filming Netflix's "Unabom", about Ted Kaczynski, as well as the Cold War espionage film "Billion Dollar Spy" and the action-thriller "Bear Country".

"Highlander" will be produced by Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, along with Neal H Moritz, 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski's production company, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.

United Artists has acquired full rights to the original 1986 movie, previously held by Lionsgate, and may also pursue developing a new television series. The original Highlander, starring Christopher Lambert, revolved around a secretive group of ageless, near-immortal warriors.
