‘Squid Game 2’ becomes Netflix's first series to debut at No 1 in all countries
"Squid Game" was expected to be a massive hit when it returned for Season 2, considering Season 1 was by far the most-watched Netflix series ever. However, it has now created another massive record.
While it's too early to know the exact viewership numbers – which are sure to be huge – the record it has set is different. "Squid Game" Season 2 is the first series to premiere at #1 in all 93 countries where Netflix operates.
This includes everywhere from the US to Cyprus, Honduras, Kenya, India, Oman, and Thailand. "Squid Game" Season 2 has drawn worldwide attention in a way no other show has done before, according to Forbes.
"Squid Game" Season 1 amassed 265.2 million views on Netflix, translating to approximately 2.2 billion hours watched. It holds the top spot on Netflix's list of the most popular shows, not only among non-English series but across the entire platform.
Despite being ranked number 1 across Netflix, this season isn't being received as positively as the first season. Its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes has dropped to 65%, compared to the 83% rating that Season 1 earned.
The newest season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller "Squid Game" premiered on Netflix this Christmas. Created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series follows a secret competition where financially struggling players participate in deadly children's games for a chance to win a huge cash prize. The first season became Netflix's most-watched series in 2021. The third and final season is anticipated to arrive in 2025.
Season 2 introduces more characters, bringing additional backstories into focus. The storyline continues to center on Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae). The cast also includes Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Park Gyu-young, and Choi Seung-hyun.
