Srijit Mukherji’s ‘Baishe Srabon’ among IMDb’s top 250 Indian films
Srijit Mukherji's 2011 directorial, "Baishe Srabon", has joined the ranks of IMDb's top 250 highest-rated Indian films. The critically acclaimed thriller now stands as the only contemporary Bengali film to be listed alongside Satyajit Ray's legendary masterpieces, "Pather Panchali", "Charulata", "Apur Sansar", and "Jalsaghar"—a significant achievement for Bengali cinema.
Sharing his elation on social media, Mukherji posted a collage featuring posters of the IMDb-ranked films, writing, "Thank you IMDb for the lovely poster of the top 250 highest-rated Indian movies. Apart from the eternal classics like "Pather Panchali", "Aparajito", "Apur Sansar", "Jalsaghar" and "Charulata", "Baishe Srabon" is the only contemporary Bengali film. What a huge honour for the team."
Released on September 30, 2011, "Baishe Srabon" stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Raima Sen, Goutam Ghose, Rajesh Sharma, and Abir Chatterjee. The film, which draws inspiration from David Fincher's "Seven" (1995), delves into the dark, twisted psychology of a serial killer in Kolkata. The plot follows the disgraced, temperamental ex-cop Prabir Roy Chowdhury (Prosenjit) and the introspective detective Abhijit Pakrashi (Parambrata) as they navigate the case's labyrinthine twists.
The enduring appeal of "Baishe Srabon" has given rise to a cinematic universe. In January 2020, Mukherji released "Dwitiyo Purush", a sequel that follows the investigative career of Abhijit Pakrashi, highlighting his evolution as a police officer under the shadow of Prabir.
In October 2023, Mukherji added another layer to this world with "Dwashom Awbotaar", a prequel that traces the backstory of Prabir Roy Chowdhury while connecting the dots to another Mukherji thriller, "Vinci Da".
Beyond "Baishe Srabon", IMDb's prestigious list features diverse films like "12th Fail", "Kantara", "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro", and "Pariyerum Perumal", offering a mix of Indian cinema's finest works.
Mukherji, known for seamlessly blending genres and narratives, continues to expand his cinematic repertoire. His most recent release, "Shotyi Bole Shotyi Kichu Nei", is a tribute to Basu Chatterjee's 1986 classic "Ek Ruka Hua Faisla". The filmmaker is also preparing for his upcoming project, "Killbill Society", a spinoff to his 2012 hit "Hemlock Society".
