Tom Cruise receives US Navy’s top civilian award
Tom Cruise has received the US Navy's highest civilian honour in recognition of his "exceptional contributions" to the armed forces through his film roles.
His portrayal as the charismatic lead in the 1986 blockbuster "Top Gun" propelled him to superstardom. The movie's immense popularity not only shattered box office records but also significantly boosted military recruitment rates.
Tom Cruise was honoured with the Distinguished Public Service Award at a ceremony held yesterday at Longcross Film Studios in Chertsey, Surrey.
The 62-year-old actor conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the "remarkable recognition."
"It's an honour to celebrate the dedication of all servicemen and women," Cruise remarked while receiving the medal and certificate from US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, who praised the actor's enduring impact.
"One thing I hold deeply is the belief that true leadership is rooted in service. It's a value I carry at my core, and I see it reflected in the dedication of our servicemen and women," Cruise stated.
The US Navy expressed gratitude to the actor, acknowledging his role in "enhancing public understanding and admiration for the skilled personnel who make immense sacrifices in uniform."
Cruise's iconic portrayal of pilot Maverick in "Top Gun," a film centred on the high-stakes world of Cold War fighter pilots, was so impactful that the Navy famously set up recruitment booths in cinemas to capitalise on its success.
The Academy Award-nominated actor returned to his iconic role as Lieutenant Pete Mitchell in the 2022 blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick."
According to the Navy, the sequel reignited enthusiasm for military service among younger audiences.
During the ceremony, US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro praised Cruise's longstanding commitment, stating, "For nearly four decades, Tom Cruise has been a steadfast advocate for the men, women, and families of the Navy and Marine Corps."
In addition to his work in "Top Gun," Cruise was lauded for his performances in acclaimed action films such as "Born on the Fourth of July," "A Few Good Men," and the "Mission: Impossible" franchise.
While filming his upcoming project, "Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning," set to hit theatres in May 2025, Cruise was in Chertsey, Surrey for the ceremony.
This distinguished civilian accolade has also been bestowed upon other cinematic legends, including Academy Award winners Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, for their contributions to the World War II epic "Saving Private Ryan."
