Velma from “Scooby-Doo” portrayed as queer on-screen
Beloved cartoon "Scooby-Doo" has depicted its iconic character Velma as queer, on screen. The news comes after decades of speculation her sexuality, but no definitive portrayals of her as queer person in the popular cartoon franchise.
Velma crushes on a costume designer named Coco Diablo in a Halloween special, "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo." The film was released online Tuesday, and will debut on Cartoon Network on October 14. Velma is voiced by comedian Kate Micucci.
In a particular scene, the character's glasses fog up and her cheeks redden, as she is clearly awestruck by Coco. She even says her tagline "Jinkies". Velma is clearly smitten, as she flirts with Coco throughout the movies.
LGBTQ fans of "Scooby-Doo" have always loved Velma's queer sensibilities. While the show has sporadically confirmed that her character was never straight, she had not outwardly flirted or expressed such strong attraction to other female characters in the decade long history of the franchise.
A producer of the show confirmed in 2020 that Velma was lesbian in his depiction of her in "Mystery Incorporated," a cartoon series that ran from 2010 to 2013.
"We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago," he wrote in an Instagram post at the time. "Most of our fans got it. To those that didn't, I suggest you look closer."
