The National Art Gallery Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) lit up last Saturday with a vibrant gathering of popular faces from the acting world. Through direct votes, the Actors Equity Bangladesh elected a new leadership panel of 21 members, including its president and general secretary.

Acclaimed actor-director Azad Abul Kalam was elected as the new president. Speaking to The Daily Star, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the voters, saying, "My gratitude to the ones who voted for me knows no bounds. This victory is a reflection of their trust in me. Together, we'll work as a united team."

He also acknowledged his contender and friend, Abdullah Rana, emphasising that the association is a collective family, built by all its members.

Newly appointed general secretary Rashed Mamun Apu shared his gratitude but admitted feeling a sense of pressure, "The overwhelming support has expanded my responsibilities. Naturally, I'm a bit anxious, I can't help but think, 'Can I fulfill this role properly?' However, I promise to give it my all and stay committed to the work."

When asked about the challenges ahead, Azad Abul Kalam was candid, "With over a thousand members, each with their hopes and concerns, it's certainly a challenge. Meeting their expectations with fairness and respect is my top priority."

On his vision as president, Azad noted, "This isn't about one person's ideas. We're a 21-member team with diverse views, and we'll decide our direction together."

He also praised the efforts of the previous committee, noting that while some projects were completed, others remain unfinished. "We'll work together to complete what's pending," he assured.

General Secretary Apu stressed taking action over feeling celebratory, "I've received a lot of love from the members. Now, it's time to get to work."

Regarding priorities, he pointed to a crucial issue, "Our organisation owns land in Aftabnagar, but political instability caused complications. We're hoping to negotiate a resolution with the authorities and reclaim it. There are plans to build an 'Actor Equity Home' on that site. We also aim to launch a welfare fund for artistes. Above all, we seek recognition of acting as a legitimate profession."

In conclusion, Azad Abul Kalam said warmly, "We actors are one big family—and together, we'll take this organisation forward."
