Forest officials from the Sundarbans East Forest Division recovered 25kg of deer meat and hunting traps during a raid in the remote Jongra area last evening.

However, no poachers could be detained.

Acting on a tip-off, the operation was conducted deep inside the forest behind the Jongra Patrol Camp, said Dipon Chandra Das, range officer of Chandpai Range under the Sundarbans East Forest Division.

"On information, we launched the operation shortly before dusk on Sunday. As soon as the poachers noticed our presence, they went into hiding deep inside the forest, leaving behind the hunted deer meat and traps," said the range officer.

"Upon searching the area, we recovered 25kg deer meat, along with the deer's head, legs, and hide," he added.

A half-km-long snare, likely used for trapping the deer, was also seized, Dipon said.

A case has been filed under the Forest Act. Efforts are on to identify and apprehend the poachers involved in this connection, added the forest official.
