Pollution from animal waste: Fish worth Tk 15 lakh die in Moulvibazar pond
Fish were dying in a pond as waste of sacrificial animals from a nearby cattle market polluted the water in Moulvibazar's Sreemangal upazila.
Dead fish started to float in Sagardighi pond since yesterday afternoon, reports our local correspondent quoting Hazi Azizur Rahman Dulal, leaseholder of the waterbody.
Big fishes like Rui, Pangas were dying due to pollution caused by waste of animals from the cattle market that had been set up nearby ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, he said.
According to experts from the fisheries department, toxic gas formed in the water due to waste, causing death of fish.
The stakeholders have incurred losses worth Tk 15 lakh due to the death of the fish, said, Jewel Mia, in-charge of Sagardighi fish farming.
Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Farazul Kabir said authorities have taken all necessary measures to deal with the situation.
