Garment workers returning to Gazipur amid lockdown
As the government has decided to allow all export-oriented factories to open from tomorrow, thousands of garment workers are returning to workplaces in Gazipur amid a nationwide lockdown, raising fears of Covid-19 transmission.
Since the announcement last night, public movement has increased on Gazipur's roads and highways, reports our correspondent.
The majority of commuters were seen walking, in the absence of public transport; some were in CNG-run autorickshaws, goods carrying trucks, as well as pickup vans.
Mauna Highway Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC), Kamal Hossain said, "Thousands of people, mostly garment workers have been coming to Gazipur since yesterday. We are struggling to control movement as public transports are suspended."
"In the meantime, we are miking to ensure they follow health guidelines and maintain distancing. We are also advising everyone to wear masks," said the OC.
Gazipur's Konabari Highway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC), Golam Faruk, said, following the announcement of factories reopening, the number of light vehicles and motorcycles on the highway has increased dramatically.
The highway police, on the other hand, are on the road every day, stopping and checking unauthorized vehicles, the OC added.
