Take care of your teeth to avoid cavities
Dental caries, also known as tooth decay or cavity, is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide.
It is a permanently damaged area in the hard surface of one's tooth that develops into tiny opening or hole.
This is caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in the mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks and not cleaning one's teeth well.
Individuals are susceptible to this disease throughout the lifetime till they have teeth.
If cavities are not treated, they get larger and affect deeper layers of the teeth. They can lead to severe toothache, infection and tooth loss.
Symptoms of a cavity include toothache, tooth sensitivity, visible holes or pits in the tooth, staining on the surface of the tooth and pain when you bite down.
When cavities and decay become severe, one may have pain that interferes with daily living.
PREVENTION
Good oral and dental hygiene can help avoid cavities and tooth decay. Basic preventive measures include:
1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and ideally after every meal, using fluoride-containing toothpaste. To clean between your teeth, floss or use an interdental cleaner.
2. Rinse your mouth.
3. Visit your dentist regularly.
4. Avoid frequent snacking and sipping sugary drinks.
5. Eat tooth-healthy foods. Avoid foods that get stuck in grooves and pits of your teeth for long periods, or brush soon after eating them.
