A woman's life changes the moment she becomes a mother. She undergoes both physical and emotional changes that mold the rest of her life to fit the role of a caregiver. The primary bond that she experiences with her child is through breastfeeding. It is an intricate act that forms a lifelong bond which can only be understood by the mother and her child.
The Daily Star looks into the benefits of breastfeeding for the mother and how new moms perceive it.
"Breastfeeding is not only beneficial for the child but for the mother as well. There is no substitute for breast milk," says Dr Fazlul Kabir Rumi, medical officer at civil surgeon's office.
Bearing a child takes its toll on the body, especially after giving birth. Stretch marks and hair fall are common along with fatigue and weight gain. But the body seems to have its own mechanism to prevent some of these things, in the form of breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding keeps blood pressure and diabetes of the mother under control, said Dr Kabir.
"Since I breastfeed my daughter, my appetite has increased. I manage to eat just the right amount and don't indulge in my hunger. By doing so, I've not only maintained my weight but lost a few pounds too!" says Irin, a mother of a six-month old infant.
Breast milk contains essential vitamins, minerals and fats which are vital for the child's growth and development. Breast milk develops the immune system of the baby and strengthens the immune system of the mother as well, said Dr Kabir.
The baby should exclusively be breastfed for the first 6 months and it should be continued till 2 years of the baby's age. Artificial formula or milk powder should preferably be avoided during this period as the child misses out on the unique benefits and nutrition offered by breast milk.
Some other benefits of breastfeeding for the mother are:
1. It burns extra calories, helping you lose the pregnancy weight faster
2. It releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps the mother's uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size.
3. Lactating mothers have less chance of breast cancer and benign breast tumors (Fibroadenoma).
4. It is a natural contraception method. Exclusive breastfeeding delays the return of the mother's menstrual period, which can increase the gap between two pregnancies.
5. It is also economical for the family as it saves time and money. There is no chance of any contamination and the baby gets maximum nutrients.
