2013 mayhem in Dhaka: 2 Hefajat leaders remanded

Ahmad Abdul Quader

A Dhaka court today placed two leaders of Hefajat-e-Islam on different terms of remand in two separate cases filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.

Hefajat's Nayeb-e-Amir Ahmad Abdul Quader was placed on a five-day remand while another leader Mufti Fakhrul Islam was placed on a four-day remand in the two cases filed on May 6, 2013.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim passed the remand orders after two investigation officers of Detective Branch of Police produced the duo before the courts with 10-day remand prayer for each of them.

DB Sub-inspector Md Asif Iqbal produced Quader before the court while DB Inspector Md Tajul Islam produced Fakhrul.

Fakhrul was also shown arrested in two more cases filed with the same police station over the 2013 mayhem after two separate petitions were filed with the court.

In the remand prayers, the IO said Quader, also secretary general of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, and Fakhrul and other FIR-named accused carried out violence in Paltan, Shapla Chatter and other places in the capital on May 5 of 2013.

But they refused to disclose names and addresses of others responsible for committing the offences. That is why they need to be remanded to know the names and addresses of other accused, the IO added.

On the other hand, defence for the accused, submitted two bail petitions along with cancellation of the remand prayers, saying that their clients were implicated in the cases as part of a conspiracy to harass them.

After hearing both the sides, the magistrate turned down the defence pleas and placed the accused on remand in the case.

A team of DB arrested Quade, also former central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, from Agargaon area yesterday evening while Fakhrul was arrested from Lalbagh area on April 14.

Police have so far arrested a total of 19 top Hefajat leaders from different places on different dates in the capital.
