Banshkhali power plant killings: HC to hear petition over judicial enquiry tomorrow

The High Court has set tomorrow for hearing a writ petition that sought its directive for a judicial enquiry into the killings of workers at SS Power I Plant at Chattogram's Banshkhali upazila on April 17.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir today set the date after petitioner's lawyer Syeda Nasreen requested it to hold hearing on the petition.

Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), a leading rights organisation, filed a writ petition with the HC on April 21 seeking its directive on the authorities concerned to conduct a judicial enquiry into the incident.

It also requested the HC for its directive on the authorities to give Tk 3 crore in compensation to the families of the workers who were killed, and Tk 2 crore compensation to families of the injured.

In the petition, it also urged the HC to ask the officials concerned of the government to withdraw the case filed against the workers, saying that officials' prompt action is highly necessary for saving and protecting workers' rights to life, property, livelihood and security.
