The High Court said Destiny Group Director Lt Col (retd) Didarul Alam may flee the country if he is granted bail in a money laundering case involving Tk 1,935 crore.

"It is evident from the record that the accused-appellant [Didarul] made confession under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before the metropolitan magistrate, Dhaka on his involvement in the crime," the HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam said in a full text of judgement.

"Furthermore, a huge amount of money amounting to Tk 1935,53,20,000 is involved in the case. Under the aforesaid scenario, if the accused-appellant is enlarged on bail, he may flee from the case as well as the country. Apart from these, he may also influence the prosecution witnesses," the HC bench said.

The full text of the verdict was released on Thursday after the judges of the HC bench completed writing and signed it.

The bench had announced a short verdict on August 14, 2018 rejecting Didarul's bail application in connection with the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Committee.

Didarul Alam was arrested on October 20, 2012.

In the full text of verdict, the HC ordered the trial court concerned to proceed with the case in accordance with law and conclude the trial of the case within the time frame given by this court earlier.
