Hefajat’s mayhem: Mufti Harun Izhar on 9-day remand
A court in Chattogram placed Hefajat-e-Islam's central leader Mufti Harun Izhar on nine-day remand today, in three cases filed with Hathazari Police Station over March 26 mayhem centring the recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Helal Uddin granted his three-day remand in each of the three cases after he was produced before the court with a seven-day remand prayer for each case, said Chattogram Court's Inspector Humayun Kabir.
"Apart from that, Mufti Harun was shown arrested in two more cases," he added.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station, said "Harun was shown arrested in three cases filed over Hefajat's clash with police during the anti-Modi protest."
A total of 10 cases were filed accusing over 100 Hefajat leaders, including its chief Junayed Babunagari, BNP men and more than 6,000 unidentified persons over the March 26 violence.
Four, including three madrasa students, were killed during the clash.
Mufti Harun Izhar, education and cultural affairs secretary of the now-dissolved central committee of Hefajat-e-Islam, was arrested from Jamiyatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa, known as Lalkhan Bazar madrasa, in Chattogram city on April 29 night.
