State files petition seeking stay on Erfan Salim's bail
The state has filed a petition challenging the High Court verdict that granted bail to Erfan Salim, son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Md Salim, in a case filed over attacking a navy officer in the capital's Dhanmondi in October last year.
The Attorney General's office submitted the petition to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday (Tuesday) seeking stay on the HC verdict.
The chamber judge of the apex court may hear the stay petition on March 28, attorney generals' office sources said.
Meanwhile, Erfan Salim's lawyer Sayed Ahmed Raza told The Daily Star today that his client is yet to be released from jail as the copy of the HC verdict has not reached the jail.
Following a bail petition filed by Erfan, the HC on March 18 granted permanent bail to him in the case.
Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station on October 25, against Erfan, 37, and three others -- AB Siddique Dipu, 45, Md Zahid, 35, and Md Mizanur Rahman, 30, for attacking him.
A team of Rapid Action Battalion conducted a drive at Erfan's house in Old Dhaka and arrested him the same day.
