Star Lifestyle’s ‘5 top picks’ from the 2021 Met Gala
Last year, no thanks to the pandemic, one of the fashion world's most exclusive events the Met Gala 2020 was called off. Similarly, this year in May when it was postponed again, there was nothing but staleness in the air. But like everything else, no bad situation lasts for long and as the world heals itself in its own pace, one of the most coveted fashion event of the year, the MET GALA 2021, finally took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMOA) on September 13, with the exclusive theme In America: A Lexicon of American Fashion.
While the theme was commendable, paying tribute to the passionate history of fashion in the Land of the Free; some of the invitees at the distinctive red-carpet event took the theme more seriously than others. They portrayed social injustice and much needed political statements to fight against prejudice and bigotry, especially in the post-pandemic times of confusion and fray. This was done in order to initiate conversations on a global level, especially when the entire world had their eyes glued to the all exclusive, star–studded night.
Here, we keep it simple though; with Star Lifestyle's very own 'top picks' from the exclusive event, all because we know fashion top-down, and we recognise a solid sartorial foundation anywhere, be it the Met Gala or the Grammys.
Numero Uno: Kendell Jenner in Givenchy
Anything with Audrey Hepburn and we are game! Remember My Fair Lady? The diamond choker, the cap sleeves and the delicate beading of the iconic embassy gown – all this is highlighted once again by the maestro Givenchy, so many years later. We certainly know, nothing could get better than this as it was the perfect homage to the perfect dress, worn by the two perfect ladies, within a time span of almost half a century.
Numero Dos: Iman in Harris Reed
One of the most interesting designers in USA at the moment is Harris Reed, a British- American fashion designer who knows his muse pretty well and certainly knows how to dress them. Iman, the favourite American celebrity who famously goes with the single name moniker, was dressed in an all-golden sequined jumpsuit paired with a metallic over-skirt and a crown of golden feathers. She looked like an angel that stepped down from the heavens and with Reed accompanying her in a 'kind of similar attire', they looked like a well-matched pair that was worthy of the red-carpet event of the year.
Numero Tres : Timothee Chalamet in Rick Owens, Chuck Taylor and Haider Ackerman
First glance at Chalamet and you probably mistake the Met Gala for the Oscars but then you look a bit more in details and you immediately realise you are at the right place. A tailored magnificence took place with the actor's look; an amalgamation of 18th century dressmaking with modern day fusion wear.
Yes! And that's what we call evolution of fashion.
Numero Cuatro: Grimes in Iris Van Herpen
It was clear that a lot of Elon Musk has rubbed off on the TikTok star who has been his partner for long and shares a child between themselves named X Æ A-Xii. Van Herpen dressed Grimes to her potential: a see-through futuristic gown, metal face mask and a real-life sword crafted from a former automatic gun. Intriguing! Is the only final word here.
Numero Cinco: Dan Levy in Loewe
His first Met Gala experience, and yet didn't look like it at all! We loved the look for many reasons than one. It was bright, it was deep-rooted and it pointed out bigotry with all the ammo in the right place. Jonathan Anderson simply knew the perfect way to dress his muse in a 'little too much'. There's a rumour everyone else loved the look as well.
While the star studded night was 'all out' in blues, reds and the rustic cowboy looks. There were many who drew their influence from the timeless movies and characters that defined the American legacy.
With a year missed, 2021 surely made up for the loss!
