HKI's president due today

Kathy Spahn, president and CEO of Helen Keller International (HKI), will arrive in Dhaka today on a five-day visit to observe the organisation's programmes in Bangladesh.
During the visit, she will meet the government's high-ups of food, health, and nutrition sectors, said a press release.
She will also visit the HKI's Diabetic Retinopathy, Education, Training and Treatment programme in Chittagong and Homestead Food Production programme in Satkhira.

Graft found in govt employees' welfare fund use

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) found a number of government officials and employees involved in misappropriating money of the Government Officers and Employees Welfare Fund.
"We have already submitted a partial report to the ACC seeking approval to file seven graft cases with Ramna Police Station in this regard," ACC Deputy Director Moni-ruzzaman Khan told the news agency yesterday.
An ACC probe team found that the officials embezzled several lakh taka from the fund in 2009-2010 using fake names and addresses in the excuse of treatment for government officers and employees.
As per provisions, a government official will get Tk one lakh per year for treatment purposes.
ACC formed the three-member special team headed by Moniruzzaman in September, 2011.

Apollo Hospitals launches info centre in Narayanganj

The Apollo Hospitals Dhaka launched an information centre at 128, BB Road, Sugandha Palace (beside Dhaka Bank) in Narayanganj yesterday.
The hospital's Senior Consultant of General and Laparoscopic Surgery Dr Anisur Rahman, and Director of Human Resources Sarath Jayasinghe, among others, were present in the inaugural function, said a press release.
The hospital has been providing similar services to local people through such centres in Chittagong, Sylhet, Bogra, Khulna, Comilla and Mymensingh.

Benapole port workers go on indefinite strike

Workers responsible for loading and unloading goods at Benapole port warehouses went on an indefinite strike yesterday demanding payment of their salary arrears.
Jahangir Alam Lal, president of Benapole Port Handling Workers Union, said they have not yet received salary for October.
He said they would go for tougher movement if their demand is not realised.
Abdul Awal, director of Benapole port, said they gave the wages to the contractors but if they did not pay the workers, necessary steps would be taken to rectify the problem.
