Ctg road crash kills 1, injures 3 cops

A covered van helper was killed and three highway policemen were injured as the van hit a truck parked on Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Dhumghat area in Mirsarai upazila in Chittagong early yesterday.
The deceased was Md Dulal, 40, son of late Hashmat Ali of Noakhali.
Jorarganj highway police said the truck hit by the Dhaka-bound covered van from behind knocked the on-duty policemen around 2:30am.
The injured cops, including Assistant Sub-inspector Md Kashem and constable Amir, were given primary treatment.

Sangram reporter held for hartal violence

A journalist also a Jamaat leader was arrested at Kashiram Balapara village in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat yesterday on charge of vandalism during hartal on Thursday.
The arrested man Hasan Abdul Maleque, 55, of Tusvandar village, former treasurer of Kaliganj upazila Jamaat unit, is an upazila correspondent of the daily Sangram.
A magistrate's court ordered to send him to jail when he was produced before it.
Kaliganj police Officer-in-Charge Amiruzzaman claimed that Maleque worked for Jamaat in the name of journalism.

College student killed in Chuadanga

A college student was killed and another was injured by some criminals at Uzirpur village in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga on Friday night.
The deceased was Ibrahim Hossain, 22, a student at Chuadanga Government College.
Injured Sohel Hasan, 24, is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police said a group of seven to eight people stabbed Ibrahim following an altercation at an Islami Jalsha (religious discussion) at Uzirpur Kasemul Ulum Kawmia Madrasa around 11:30pm.
Police arrested two people suspecting their involvement in the incident.
The incident might have occurred following a previous enmity, they said.

ASK condemns Jamaat-Shibir violence

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) yesterday condemned the atrocities of Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat backed Islami Chhatra Shibir on Thursday, after the verdict sentencing Delawar Hossain Sayedee to death was announced.
Expressing grief over Thursday's incidents, ASK said Jamaat and Shibir are trying to destroy Bangladesh's religious harmony, said a press release.
On Thursday, at least 40 people were killed and about 200 others were injured in a burst of violence as Jamaat-Shibir activists clashed with police after Sayedee's verdict was announced, added the release.

ACCA brand awareness fair launched

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Bangladesh launched a two-day brand awareness fair on the British Council premises in the capital yesterday.
Four approved learning partners of ACCA are taking part in the fair, which ends today, said a press release. The partners are: LCBS Dhaka, Chartered University College, IBS and Saifur's University College.
Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, chairman of the University Grants Commission, attended the inaugural programme of the fair as chief guest, said a press release.

Housewife 'commits suicide'

A housewife allegedly committed suicide by taking poison at Dhalpara village in Singair upazila of Manikganj on Thursday night.
The deceased was Hasina Begum, wife of day labourer Khorsed Alam of Dhalpara, left a 10-year-old daughter.
Singair police Sub-inspector Nirmal Chandra Dev said Hasina took poison around 8:00pm and died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from Manikganj Sadar Hospital.
Family sources said Hasina had tried to commit suicide several times due to her physical and mental sickness.

40 held for illegal border crossing at Benapole

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) held 40 people when they were trying to enter Indian territory illegally through Kharidanga bordering area near Benapole yesterday.
Of the arrestees, 17 were men, 14 women and nine children.
Benapole BGB Camp Commander Rafiqul said they could not arrest the human traffickers as they fled the scene sensing presence of the BGB team.
Later, the arrested were handed over to Benapole Port Police Station.
A case was filed in this connection.
