Illegal extraction of stone continues in Sylhet's Gowainghat upazila destroying the environment. An administrative order directed 12 local traders last month to stop digging and filling up the already dug-up trenches, but the traders didn't comply. Such pits have been dug on around 50 acres of land in the upazila. The photo was taken at the Piyain river in Jaflong yesterday. Photo: Sheikh Nasir

The road transport ministry point to the slow-moving three-wheelers as a key reason behind the growing number of road accidents. However, the ministry could not take the vans off the roads. This muddy section of Beribadh (embankment) road in Labagh on the western fringe of the capital has no sign of any hard surface that once existed. Thanks to years of negligence of the authorities, this road is now a nightmare for the road users, especially during the rainy season. If properly maintained, this long road from Mirpur to the old part of the city could contribute to easing traffic congestions on nearby thoroughfares. Photo: Rashed Shumon
The picture shows how the public park of DCC, a vast section of the road and its sidewalk at Jatrabari intersection below Mayor Hanif Flyover have turned into a disorderly business zone. The occupation of the park is depriving local children of their leisure activities on the one hand, and on the other, the road occupation is resulting in added travel time for passengers to and from Chittagong, Sylhet, Comilla and surrounding districts. Although the roads at the entry and exit point of Dhaka have been widened to a great extent with a large amount of public money, people travelling below the flyover still spend nearly two to three hours to pass the intersection. Workers busy creating block prints at a custom boutique print shop ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. There are quite a good number of these shops on the upper floors of New Super Market in the capital. These shops have become popular among women who wish to get customised tailored outfits with their own choice of cloths and design. After selecting the cloths, a customer gets the cloths printed at these shops with their own choice of design blocks.
