Pahela Falgun, the first day of spring according to the Bangla calendar, coincides with Valentine’s day today. But young people in colourful attires were seen at parks and on university campuses yesterday. The photo of the toddler with the garland was taken in the capital’s Shahbagh. Photo: Amran Hossain
Sajib Hossain, who sells used copies of the so-called guide books, is sitting in the middle of stacks of such books near Mirpur Cricket Stadium. He says there is hardly any demand for the books because of the closure of educational institutions. Photo: Palash Khan

Shujon had found a way to turn his fascination with folding flat sheets into three-dimensional objects into a profession, becoming a professional origami artist of sorts. During better times, he would get called from all over the city to decorate weddings with his wide array of intricate designs. But then came the pandemic, and even as life returned to a semblance of normalcy, business was not the same any more for him. These days, Shujon goes around Dhaka crafting his date-leaf designs and selling them, in equal parts performance and hawking. With today’s festivities of Pahela Falgun and Valentine’s Day, he was hoping his items would sell a little more than they usually do. The photo was taken yesterday at Hatirjheel. PHOTO: EK ENAMUL HAQ
