Two boys gather peanuts from a submerged field on Char Gabsara in Tangail’s Bhuapur upazila yesterday, trying to salvage whatever has not yet rotted. Many croplands and low-lying areas along the riverside in different upazilas of the district have been inundated due to the untimely swelling of the Jamuna. PHOTO: STAR
Toxic liquid waste is being discharged into the Dhaleshwari by factories in the BSCIC Tannery Industrial Estate in Savar’s Hemayetpur. The pollution of the river has led to an alarming decline in fish population. The arable land in nearby areas is also losing fertility. A parliamentary body has recommended closure of the estate. The photo was taken last week. Photo: Palash Khan
