Illegally built slums next to the Tejgaon rail tracks in the capital’s Tejkuni Para were demolished yesterday by the railway authorities, as the slum-dwellers did not move from the area despite repeated warnings. However, this has left many people homeless, who are now trying to relocate with whatever belongings they have left after the destruction of their homes.

Rizia Begum selling coconuts to tourists on the Passur river near Joymoni area in Bagerhat’s Mongla upazila. Since childhood, she has been rowing her boat on the river and selling seasonal fruits to tourist boats in and around Sundarbans, as well as foreign ships anchored off the Mongla port.
