Students wade through ankle-deep water in Arial Khan river at Bukhainagar of Barishal’s Sadar upazila to get to a boat that will take them to school. Due to the accumulation of silt and the consequent rise of numerous shoals, the navigability of the river has decreased significantly. During low tide, the locals have to walk through the water to reach their boats or trawlers.

A woman crosses the Tejgaon rail tracks with a train approaching from just metres away. Despite a law in place, people take such risks almost every day, often resulting in injuries or deaths, while the authorities remain oblivious. According to Section 124(a) of the Railway Act, 1890, if a person attempts to cross a railway track in any means, with the knowledge of a train approaching, they shall be punished with a fine which may extend to Tk 50. Due to mindless pollution and encroachment, the Kalyanpur Khal is merely a narrow stream with dark coloured water. Illegal gas and waterlines have been pulled over the river to facilitate the nearby slums as a result of which, the canal has been further pushed to obliteration.
