THE “LIVEABOARDS” OF BENGAL … Some people from the Manta community fixing fishing nets on a char in Barishal Sadar’s Bukhainagar area. This community is known to have been living on boats for over a century. They spend their entire lives, from birth to death, on the boats and live on the fish they catch for themselves. They sometimes sell the fish to get money to buy other essentials such as rice and lentils. The photo was taken recently. PHOTO: TITU DAS
Women from low-income groups stand in a long line under the scorching sun to purchase rice at subsidised prices from a TCB truck on Khulna city’s Sher-e-Bangla Road. Every day, the queue begins at 5:00am, and the women wait for their turn to purchase the essentials till late into the afternoon. Lines near TCB trucks have been getting longer with prices of daily necessities skyrocketing.
