Two women trying to collect whatever water is left in an almost dried-up reservoir at Kalairag of Sylhet’s Companiganj upazila. Unplanned mining of sand and stone has had adverse effects on the water bodies in the area, giving it the look of a wasteland. While the well-to-do can help themselves during the dry seasons by installing tube wells, those from the low-income groups are left to suffer from a crisis of water. The photo was taken recently. A worker carries watermelons to a wholesale fruit market in Dhaka’s Sadarghat on Sunday. Wholesalers sold the popular summer fruit, high in demand during Ramadan, for Tk 7,000 to Tk 50,000 per hundred, depending on the size. Many retailers, however, sell watermelons in kilograms to make extra profit. Photo: Amran Hossain
Fishermen set up zero-mesh nets in the Shibsa river in Khulna’s Paikgachha upazila to trap shrimp fries during high tides. Setting up such enclosures in waterbodies are illegal as the eggs and fries of all aquatic animals get trapped and killed, threatening the river’s marine life. However, locals still choose this technique as they are able to catch 400-500 pieces of shrimp fries every 5-6 hours, selling each for Tk 1. The photo was taken yesterday. Photo: Habibur Rahman
