As the country gears up for Eid-ul-Fitr festivities, people from the low-income groups are still having to struggle for their daily meals. Yesterday, many waited for hours under the scorching sun to get some rice, lentils, sugar and dates at subsidised prices from a TCB truck in Khulna city’s Machghat area. However, the consumers were disappointed that dates were provided at the end of Ramadan.

This bridge over the Halta canal in Barguna’s Pathorghata upazila collapsed on March 23 after a bulk carrier vessel hit one of its pillars. Residents of two villages on the either side of the canal need to take a detour of about 15km as the authorities are yet to take any initiative to repair the bridge or set up a temporary one.
