Fire damages Narayanganj power plant

An explosion caused a fire at Meghnaghat power plant in Narayanganj last evening, leading to a halt in electricity production at the plant and supply to the national grid.
The explosion that occurred around 7:00pm also damaged the three-storey steel structure of the plant.
Fire service sources said the blast resulted from a mechanical failure in the steam turbine of the plant capable of producing 450 megawatts of electricity.
Three fire engines from Narayanganj, Demra and Daudkandi of Comilla doused the flame in two and a half hours, said Momtaz Uddin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service.
Later, the fire fighters poured water on the plant to keep it cool.
High officials of power and energy ministry visited the spot.
