Tagore's 150th birth anniversary observed
A two-day programme was organised in Chittagong on Friday marking the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
Bangladesh and India organised the programme at Shilpakala Academy here.
A discussion and recitation by the children were held on the first day.
Primary and Mass Education minister Dr Afsarul Ameen was present as the chief guest at the discussion.
He said Tagore introduced Bangla language as well as the Bangalee nation to the world.
Terming him the single man to born in a thousand year, Prof Anupam Sen said as a person he was unique.
Tagore was a philanthropist, Prof Anupam said, adding that he spent the money from his Nobel Prize for welfare of the farmers.
Nurul Islam, additional commissioner of Chittagong, said Tagore has enlightened the whole nation.
Poet Belal Chowdhury said any description about Tagore is incomplete as he was a vast talent.
Syed Hasan Imam, who presided over the meeting, said the governments of Bangladesh and India are observing the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore as he wrote the national anthem of both the country.
Photography exhibition held
A weeklong photography exhibition titled “light... more... light” began at Shilpakala Academy in the port city on Saturday.
Chittagong Photo Artist Club (CPAC) and its sister concern Photo Bank Gallery and Photo Art Institute organised the exhibition supported by Epic Properties Ltd.
The Daily Prothom Alo Resident Editor Abul Momen inaugurated the exhibition as the chief guest where Alliance Francaise de Chittagong Director Samuel Berthet, Chittagong Press Club (CPC) General Secretary Rashed Rauf and Mahruzul Bari, Head of Marketing and Sales of Epic Properties Ltd were the special guests.
Momen in his speech said photography is a modern and sophisticated medium.
Terming it a strong medium, he said it easily can make a dewdrop looks brighter and more colourful than even the sun.
Photo Gallery Chief Shoeb Faruquee, Golam Quddus Helal and Esha Khan and poet Kamrul Hasan Badal also spoke on the occasion.
About 120 photographs were displayed in the exhibition.
Tribute to Tagore, Nazrul
Chittagong Sunshine Grammar School and College, one of the prominent English schools in the port city, organised a programme on “Honouring the personalities take pride in” on the occasion of World Music Day and to pay tribute to poet Rabindranath Tagore and poet Nazrul Islam.
Students from different classes performed chorus and solo performances from Tagore and Nazrul on the occasion that spell bound the guardians, teachers and audiences.
The programme started with the famous Tagore song “Aanonda loke mongola loke birajo” followed by the famous Nazrul's gono sangeet “Ei sikal para chhal” and “Karar oi lauha kapat”.
Later, the kids performed dance with the tune of the songs “megher kole raud hesechhey” and “Rum jhum, rum jhum”.
Students recited the poems “Jhinge ful jhinge ful” and “Boner Pakhi” and so on one after another at the programme.
The programme ended with the Tagore's play “Khaytir Birambana”.
Computer science festival held
A two-day long festival was concluded with much fan fare and festivity at Chittagong University Engineering and Technology (Cuet) in Chittagong on Saturday.
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department of Cuet organised the festival.
The programme featured mock contest, sports competition, workshop, and various cultural events.
Cuet acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Saiful Islam inaugurated the festival as the chief guest with CSE department Chairman Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Khan in the chair.
Government's Science and ICT Adviser Minur Hasan and Cuet Teachers' Association General Secretary Mir Mohammd Sakki Ahmed also spoke at the inaugural programme.
A total of 12 teams from five universities took part in the mock contest on the first day of the festival. Beside a total of 72 students from different departments of Cuet participated in the gaming competition.
Wiki Fest Chittagong-2011 held
Speakers in the port city on Monday said Chittagong is called the gateway of Bangladesh and it has thousands of years of history, culture and heritage.
They were speaking at function titled 'Wiki Fest Chittagong-2011' held on the premises of Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Chittagong. Wikipedia Co-ordination Committee, Chittagong, organised the festival.
They said they have to put forward the history, culture and heritage of Chittagong to the whole world through Wikipedia. Cooperation of every Chittagong people is required in this regard, they added.
Speakers said, “If we can include the history, culture and heritage of Chittagong in Wikipedia to make know our new generation.”
A drawing competition on 'Prio Chattagram' was organised on the occasion. Around 60 students from various schools of Chittagong participated in the competition.
An inter-university quiz competition was also organised and four universities including Chittagong University (CU), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet), International Islamic University, Chittagong (IIUC) and University of Science and Technology, Chittagong (USTC) participated in the quiz.
Later a cultural function was held on culture and heritage of Chittagong.
M A Malek, editor of the local daily 'Dainik Azadi' attended the function as the chief guest with Convener of Wikipedia Co-ordination Committee Chittagong and principal of Sunshine Grammar School, Safia Gazi Rahman in the chair.
