Call to stop politics of 'trump card'
Speakers on Friday said nobody thinks today to sacrifice their lives for the sake of the country rather everybody aims at power and self-interest.
They were speaking at a programme in memory of the 100th birth anniversary of Pritilata Waddedar and Begum Sufia Kamal organised by Samaj Samiksha Sangha, Chittagong on the DC Hill premises in the port city.
Begum Mushtari Shafi inaugurated the programme with Kazi Mahmud Islam Bilu in the chair.
Former adviser to a caretaker government Advocate Sultana Kamal in her speech as the chief guest said the real freedom of people is yet to achieve. She urged all to follow the ideology of Pritilata.
Political leader Mahmudur Rahman Manna said the ruling Awami League and the main opposition BNP are now practising the politics of 'trump card' which should be stopped.
Dr Kaberi Gayen, Razakuzzaman Ratan and Shihab Chowdhury also spoke at the programme.
War crimes trial to start soon
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Shaifq Ahmed on Sunday said those who committed crimes against humanity, raped women, torched the houses and compelled one crore people to leave the country during the War of Liberation would be tried.
This was the election pledge of this government, he said, adding that the trial will start shortly and be completed during the tenure of this government.
Shafiq said this at the inaugural session of digital display board of daily cause list of court as the chief guest on the Chittagong District Judge Court premises. He also laid the foundation stone of Chief Judicial Magistrate Building.
State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advocate Kamrul Islam spoke as the special guest in the meeting.
Abul Kasem Master MP, former Chittagong City Corporation Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, District Judge Abdul Kuddus, Chittagong District Bar Association President Salehuddin Haider Siddiqui and General Secretary Mahbubul Alam spoke at the function with Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Secretary Sahidul Karim in the chair.
The law minister said it needs time to collect evidences to file a case about an incident which happened 40 years ago. Investigating team and prosecution team have been doing this jointly maintaining the international standard to make the trial acceptable to everyone, he said.
Advocate Kamrul said prime minister at a press conference on Saturday categorically said election commission must be powerful and the next national election will be held under the election commission. There is no scope to discuss the issue of caretaker government and no one could raise any question against the elections to be held under this government, he added.
This government has already set an example of fair election through holding two by-elections, municipality elections and union parishad elections, he said.
Kamrul said there is no scope to discuss about caretaker government but discussion can be held on the constitution of a powerful election commission, he added.
World Tourism Day observed
A prize giving ceremony of a painting and drawing competition was held at seminar room of Hotel Agrabad on Sunday, marking the 'World Tourism Day'. Hotel Agrabad organised the event.
MA Malek, Editor of The Dainik Azadi, was present as the chief guest on the occasion with Chief Executive of the hotel H M Hakim Ali in the chair.
Prof Dr Mohammad Ali Chowdhury and Shakil Ali, director of the hotel, were present as the special guests.
Speakers urged the new generation and authorities concerned to play their due roles to establish tourism sector as an important industry in greater Chittagong.
Later, MA Malek distributed prizes among the winners.
Abdul Karim's contributions recalled
Premier University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Anupam Sen on Friday said Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad had a great significant contribution to literary arena.
Recalling his activities, Prof Sen said Sahitya Bisharad enriched the Bengali literature collecting hundreds of folk manuscripts.
He was addressing a conference as the chief guest organised by Chittagong Academy in the auditorium of Chittagong Press Club (CPC).
He stressed the need for maintaining quality in writing literature for the welfare of human being.
Principal Anwara Begum chaired the conference where Dr Mahbubul Haque of Chittgaong University (CU), writer and adviser of Chittagong Academy Fahmida Amin, Prof Rita Dutta, Nesar Ahmed, Lion Rupom Kishore Barua, researcher Ishaq Chowdhury and Rashed Rauf also spoke at the programme.
Later, a cultural programme was also held.
'Rehabilitate slum people'
Speakers on Friday called upon the government to rehabilitate the uprooted and slum people constructing new buildings at its proposed site Jangal Salimpur.
They made the call at a rally following a human chain programme organised by Bangladesher Workers Party on the Chittagong Press Club (CPC) premises.
District and city leaders Indra Kumar Nath, Abul Hossain, Kaisar Alam, Sharif Chauhan and Chhinnomul Bastuhara Samannaya Parishad Metropolitan President GM Mostafa spoke at the function with its President Advocate Abu Hanif in the chair.
