World Diabetes Day observed
Speakers at a meeting in the port city on Monday urged the government to take necessary steps to create awareness about diabetes among the people.
Chittagong Diabetic Samity organised the meeting on the Chittagong Diabetic Hospital premises, marking the World Diabetes Day -2011 with a slogan “Diabetes kills one person every 8 second. Act on diabetes now”.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner (CMPC) Mohammad Abul Kashem inaugurated the programme as the chief guest with Samity President Dr Syedur Rahman in the chair.
Terming the decease a silent killer, Kashem said awareness, regular exercise and food habit could easily prevent the decease.
Moslem Uddin, Samity Vice President SM Shawkat Hossain, its Joint Secretary Advocate Ellius Miyan and Principal Lion Sanaullah spoke as the special guests at the programme.
A colourful procession was also brought out on the occasion that paraded the important thoroughfares in the city.
Call to follow ideals of Maniruzzaman Islamabadi
Speakers at a memorial meeting on Monday called upon the people to follow the life and struggle of the visionary persons like Maulana Maniruzzaman Islamabadi to establish a country free from exploitation and oppression of foreign forces.
Islamabadi Mrityu Barshiki Udjapan Parishad organised the meeting in the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI) auditorium to mark the 63rd death anniversary of Maulana Maniruzzaman Islamabadi.
Veteran anti-British revolutionary Binod Bihari Chowdhury was present as the chief guest with MCCI Vice-President AM Mahbub Chowdhury in the chair.
Binod Bihari in his speech said Islamabadi created Khilafat movement and took part in the non-cooperation movement in British regime for establishing an oppression-free country.
Prof Md Maniruzzaman, Major General (Retd) Syed Md Ibrahim, Dr Mohammad Abul Kashem and Prof Masum Chowdhury also spoke at the meeting.
Ghazal evening held
A ghazal evening featured solo rendition of Alamgir Alauddin, virtuoso ghazal singer of the port city, on Friday.
Alamgir enthralled the audience with the concord of melody and verse of ghazals.
'Chattagram Manchha Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha' organised the event at the Theatre Institute, Chittagong (TIC) in the port city.

Director Md Mohsin was present as the chief guest at the programme.
Alamgir rendered 18 famous ghazals of Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh.
Sanjoy Chowdhury, Sakhawat Hossain, Md Khaled Uddin and Md Shahnewaj were with him with key board, tabla, base guitar and lead guitar.
Fuel price hike protested
Leaders of Chattagram Prime Mover Owners' Association at a meeting in the port city on Monday protested fresh fuel price hike.
Organisation's general secretary Abul Hasem presided over the meeting, says a press release.
They said the government created chaos in the transport sector by increasing the fuel price.
Terming it a wrong decision, they said the transport sector would face the problems of price hike of different equipment due to the price hike of fuel.
They said they would go for tougher movement if the government does not reduce the price.
SM Saiful Alam, Muntasir Quader Pavel and Md Yusuf spoke at the meeting.
DIB to set up centre in Ctg
'Democracy International Bangladesh' (DIB) is keen to set up its centre in the port city.
DIB chief Dr Owen Lippert expressed his desire to Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor M Manjur Alam at a meeting in his office on Tuesday in the city.
CCC Councillor Didarur Rahman, Md Sirajul Islam, Mahfuz Alam, CCC Chief Executive Officer Anwara Begum, CCC Secretary Samsuddoha, DIB Senior Programme Officer Md Abdul Momen and YPSA representative Md Shahidul Islam were present.
Lippert said they have been working in Bangladesh for giving democracy an institutional shape.
The organisation will arrange roundtable, workshop and open discussion in this regard in the port city, he added.
Lippert sought help from CCC mayor to make the programmes a success.
