Contributions of Sufia Kamal recalled
Begum Sufia Kamal through her life and activities played a great role in spreading progressive women movement across the country as well as establishing society free from discrimination, speakers said at a meeting in the port city.
In observance of 12th death anniversary of the poet, Bangladesh Mahila Samity organised the meeting at its office at Dosta Building on Friday.
The programme discussed on life, activities and struggles of the poet.
Begum Mustari Shafi spoke at the event as chief guest with organisation's President Principal Latifa Kabir in the chair.
Samity's Vice-President Rawshan Yusuf, General Secretary Sugata Barua, central committee member Nurjahan Khan, Organising Secretary Shirin Akhtar Hena, Legal Aid Secretary Nilufar Jahan Baby, Treasurer Purba Das, Prof Swati Paul and Prof Sheli Dey spoke at the programme.

'The Bapu and the Poet' staged
Theatre enthusiastic people of the port city enjoyed the play “The Bapu and the Poet” at Muslim Hall in the port city on Sunday.
Academy of Theatre Arts of Bangalore Little Theatre Foundation staged the drama based on letters and articles exchanged between Mahatma Gandhi and poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre and Assistant High Commission of India jointly organised the programme.
Dr Vijoy Padaki, honorary president of the “Academy of Theatre Arts” designed and directed the play.
Social scientist Prof Anupam Sen spoke as chief guest on the occasion where Somnath Ghosh, Assistant High Commissioner of India delivered the welcome speech.

Tributes paid to Ajit Roy
A programme in memory of Ajit Roy was held at District Shilpakala Academy on Saturday in the port city.
Abhyudoy Sangeet Angan, Chittagong organised the programme in observance of the first death anniversary of Ajit Roy.
Noted artiste Rafiqul Alam was chief guest at the programme while Begum Mustari Safi inaugurated the event.
Rafiqul said Ajit Roy through his songs during the War of Liberation inspired the people to take part in the war. He did not create only 'Gono Sangeet' movement in the country but also played a significant role in spreading Tagore songs.
The programme started with a Tagore song rendered by Shreyasi Roy, daughter of Ajit Roy.
Many patriotic songs composed by Ajit Roy were performed at the programme. Artistes from Abhyudoy also performed group songs at the programme.
Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra artiste Mrinal Bhattacharya and Sammilita Sanskritik Jote General Secretary Hasan Arif also spoke.
Artistes Mohadeb Ghosh, Abdur Rahim, Makhan Haldar, Adhyudoy Dhaka unit General Secretary Shyamal Chowdhury and Prabir Paul paid homage to Ajit Roy.

CU School of Debate body formed
Payal Barua and Nafiul Islam were elected president and general secretary of the 13th executive committee of Bangladesh School of Debate-Chittagong University Chapter (BSD-CU) on Friday for one year, says a press release.
The committee was formed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BSD-CU at a local restaurant in the port city. Prof Dr Abdullah Al Faruque was present as chief guest.
Journalist M Nasirul Haque, Assistant Professor Fuad Hasan, Dristy President Masud Bakul, Panthahjon President Mithun Mallik and BSD Chairperson Advocate Saiful Abedin were present as special guests at the meeting with BSD-CU Chapter President Prabir Barua Chowdhury in the chair.
Speakers said debate can play a significant role in establishing a logical society, eradicating corruption, political violence and social decadence from the country. They said organisations like BSD, which has been working in this sector, would play a vital role in establishing a logical society.

Inter-private university soccer begins
The inaugural ceremony of 'Inter-Private University Soccer Tournament -2011' was held at MA Aziz Stadium in the port city on Saturday.
The tournament first of its kind in the city was inaugurated by Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Mohammad Manjur Alam.
Independent University of Bangladesh Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hasan Imtiaz Chowdhury, BGC Trust University VC Prof Saroj Kanti Singh Hazarie, Dr Abu Bakar Rafiq, USTC Pro-VC Prof AHM Ishaque Chowdhury , Southern University Pro-VC Dr Sharifuzzaman, Chittagong Zila Krira Sangstha (CJKS) Secretary Hafizur Rahman and Dr Samsul Alam were present at the programme.
Seven private universities are participating in the tournament.
