46 hurt in blockade violence

At least 46 people including 10 policemen were injured as blockaders clashed with law enforcers and resorted to arson, vandalism and explosion in different parts of the country today.
Of the injured, four were bullet hit in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur while three sustained rubber bullet injuries in Daudkandi upazila of Comilla.
They sustained injuries during police action, as the lawmen, after being attacked, opened fire on blockaders in the districts, on the second day of the opposition-called 72-hour blockade.
Meanwhile, Gazipur district unit BNP called a daylong hartal (shutdown) for tomorrow in the district protesting “police attack on its activists”.
Pro-blockade activists set fire to the district office of Jatiya Party in Kurigram and five vehicles in Narayanganj, Kishoreganj and Chandpur, and exploded 13 crude bombs in Chittagong and Gazipur.
Police picked up three people for their alleged involvement with the arson attack on JP office.
They also vandalised the Chamber of Commerce and Industries Bhaban and a branch of a private bank in Rajshahi.
Blockaders also clashed with police in Chittagong. But no casualty was reported from there.
Meanwhile, three people were injured, one in critical condition, as blockaders set fire to a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Patuakhali last night.
The BNP-led 18-party opposition called the blockade of roads, rail and waterways for the second time in a span of a week protesting schedule for 10th parliamentary election and “false cases” against its leaders and “torture and repression” of its activists.
At least four people were killed across the country on the first day of blockade that stated at 6:00am yesterday.
GAZIPUR
The clash ensued around 11:00am when police tried to resist a procession led by Kazi Saiyadul Alam Babul, general secretary of BNP district unit, in Trimore area of Kaliakoir upazila headquarters.
At least 38 people were injured as law enforcers charged batons and fired 22 rounds of teargas canisters and gunshots on the opposition men who retaliated with brick chips.
The local BNP leaders have called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in the district for tomorrow what they termed “police action on party men”.
Five policemen are among the injured. They received treatment at a local hospital, reports our correspondent.
Four of the injured, who sustained bullet wound, were sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital while 27 were admitted to Kaliakoir Upazila Health Complex, said Kamal Uddin, health and family planning officer of the health complex.
Others injured were undergoing treatment at different private hospitals in the upazila.
Prior to the clash, the blockaders exploded four crude bombs there.
Another group of pro-blockade activists exploded two more crude bombs on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Tongi around 7:00am.
KURIGRAM
The activists of BNP set fire to the district office of Jatiya Party pouring patrol around 10:30am, said Abdul Baten, officer-in-charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station.
Before setting fire to the office, the main opposition men ransacked it, the OC added.
On information, fire fighters went to the spot and doused the blaze within few minutes, the police official said.
Police picked up three people from the spot in this connection.
RAJSHAHI
The activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, vandalised the Chamber of Commerce and Industries building and a branch of Dutch-Bangla Bank at Alaka Intersection in the city around 11:30am.
The JCD activists also blockaded a road there after the vandalism.
CHITTAGONG
The blockade supporters hurled seven crude bombs at police, triggering a clash between the law enforcers and blockaders at Sagarika area in the port city around 11:00am.
Police fired at least 15 rounds of teargas canisters to disperse the opposition men. None was injured there.
NARAYANGANJ
Blockaders torched three pickup vans at Jatra Intersection in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj around 3:30am.
KISHOREGANJ
Pro-blockade activists also torched a truck at Bajitpur of Kishoreganj around 4:15am.
CHANDPUR
Blockaders torched a truck at Stadium Road in the town around 7:00am.
They also blocked Chandpur-Comilla highway putting logs in the morning.
COMILLA
Jamaat-Shibir men hurled brick chips towards on duty law enforcers on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Shahidnagar in Daudkandi upazila around 2:30pm triggering a one-hour clash in the area.
Police lobbed 85 rounds of rubber bullet to quell the situation that left three Jamaat-Shibir men injured, said Abul Faisal, officer in charge of Daudkandi Model Police Station.
Five lawmen were also hurt in the attack by the blockaders, the police official said.
Police later detained six people from the spot for interrogation.
