Fire burns down 8 cotton warehouses in Tongi
A fire that broke out at eight cotton warehouses in Gazipur's Tongi this afternoon was brought under control after three hours.
Three fire engines went to the cotton godowns in Tongi Millgate area around 3:20pm to bring the blaze under control, reports our Gazipur correspondent quoting Ariful Islam, duty officer of Tongi Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Witnesses said around 3:15pm, an electricity transformer exploded and some nearby warehouses caught fire. The fire spread quickly and the goods and machinery in eight cotton warehouses were burnt.
Abu Sajedul Kabir Joarder, a senior official of Tongi Fire Service, told The Daily Star that the fire was brought under control after about three hours. "But we're still working. Cotton is highly flammable and cannot be easily extinguished."
He said it could take another hour to complete the work. Details would be announced later.
Locals initially tried to control the fire with the help of the firefighting system of a garment factory adjacent to the warehouse.
A total of eight cotton warehouses including four belonging to Saidul Islam, two belonging to Milon Mia, one belonging to Zahirul Islam and one belonging to Jahangir Alam were burnt in the fire.
Two tea shops of Mamun and Kamal were also burnt.
The fire official said the fire is believed to have originated from an electrical short circuit.
No casualties were reported.
He said that the amount of damage will be known after an investigation.
