Suspended DIG Bazlur Rashid gets HC bail
The High Court today granted bail till April 30 to suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Bazlur Rashid, who was convicted in a case filed for amassing Tk 3.14 crore beyond known sources of income.
The HC bench of Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order following an appeal filed by Bazlur Rashid challenging the trial court verdict that on October 23 last year sentenced him to five years' imprisonment and fined him Tk 5 lakh in the case.
The HC granted bail to Bazlur for a "short period" as it will hold hearing on his appeal soon, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star.
Lawyer Humayun Kabir Pallab appeared for Bazlur Rashid during the hearing.
The ACC arrested Bazlur Rashid in the case filed with ACC's Integrated District Office-1 of Dhaka and showed him arrested in the case on October 20 of 2019.
The following day, the home ministry suspended him from the service.
According to the case statement, Bazlur Rashid signed a contract with a real estate company in 2018 to buy a flat in the capital's Siddheshwari Road area at Tk 3.09 crore.
From April 20 to June 7, 2018, Bazlur Rashid paid Tk 3.08 crore in cash and cheque to the company, but during ACC officials' interrogation, he could not show any legal source of the money.
