Robbers looted more than Tk 11 crore in cash from a vehicle that was on its way to refill DBBL ATMs in Savar this morning.

The incident took place in Dhaka's Turag area, Shariful Islam, inspector (investigation) of Turag Police Station, told The Daily Star.

The incident took place around 7:30am as officials of a private security agency were heading toward Savar on a microbus after collecting the cash from the bank's office in Mirpur, he said.

A group of armed people intercepted the vehicle and looted the money at gunpoint, police officials said.

The filing of a case in this regard is underway.

"We are trying to arrest the criminals and recover the looted money," the inspector said.

Abul Kashem Md Shirin, managing director of Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd (DBBL), said the bank appointed a third party to carry the cash to refill the automated-teller machines (ATMs) of the bank in Savar.

The incident occurred at Uttara. The bank and the third-party company will not face losses as the funds were insured, he said.

This means the insurance company will face a loss. But the thing is that if such incidents happen frequently, insurance companies will be reluctant to provide insurance in the days ahead.
