Ashrayan-2 project: Over 100 houses in Pabna’s Santhia upazila built poorly, locals say
Several new houses of Ashrayan-2 project in Santhia upazila of Pabna already require repair work. Out of 372 houses, over 100 are 1.5ft shorter than others.
Landless Nazma Begum was elated when she finally got a house under Ashrayan-2 project at Machgram village, under Pabna's Santhia upazila. However, she said that the height of the house is lower than usual.
"The house is only 7ft in height," said Nazma, adding that due to negligence of the local authority, these houses were poorly built.
Abdullah Al Jaber, project implementation officer of Santhia upazila, told The Daily Star that the height of the houses was supposed to be 8.5ft.
"The construction works were completed very fast, so we were unable to monitor all sites properly," said the implementation officer, adding, "Due to the fault of the construction workers, few houses were not built according to the plan. Repair works have already started."
According to locals, a total of 372 houses were built for landless and homeless families in Santhia upazila under the Ashrayan project. Of them, over 100 houses are shorter in height, all because of the authority's lax monitoring, they said.
SM Jamal Ahmed, Santhia upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), told The Daily Star that the houses will be repaired soon and action will be taken after investigation against those responsible.
Md Monsur Alom, chairman of Khetupara union, however said, the houses under the Ashrayan project were built under supervision of project implementation officer, and local representatives were not involved.
