Drive against lake polluters of posh areas from Jan 4: Dhaka north mayor
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam today said a drive will be conducted from January 4 next year against the elite of Gulshan, Baridhara, Banani, and Niketan who are illegally dumping sewage from their houses into lakes.
"We wanted to release fish in the lakes of Gulshan, Baridhara, Banani, Niketan, but we could not due to water pollution. I couldn't bring diversity [to the lake]. Because in the elite areas, the people of the elite class have connected the sewage line of their houses directly to the lake.
"We have made a list of those who have connected the sewage line illegally, no one will be spared," the mayor said while inaugurating the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Memorial Park in Gulshan this afternoon.
"DNCC is grateful to have named the park after Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed. Everyone should know the history of the Liberation War, the history of Bangabandhu, the history of the four national leaders. This park will play a role in protecting the memory of Tajuddin Ahmed.
"If we loved our country, today the fields would not have been occupied, the sidewalks would not have been occupied, the canal space would not have been occupied. I want to tell those who have illegally occupied the fields, footpaths and canals to remove the illegal occupation themselves. Otherwise, when bulldozers will go, the boundaries will no longer be measured," the mayor added.
