Nasirnagar attack: 13 including UP chairman sentenced to 4yrs in prison

A Brahmanbaria court today sentenced 13 accused including Haripur Union Parishad Chairman Dewan Atiqur Rahman Ankhi to four years imprisonment in a case filed over vandalising temples and for carrying out arson attacks in Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar in 2016. 

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Brahmanbaria Masud Parvez delivered the verdict this afternoon, our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports quoting Court Inspector Kazi Didarul Alam.

The convicts are Dewan Atiqur Rahman Ankhi, Chairman of Haripur Union Parishad, Mukhles Mia, Idhu Mia, Mofizul Haque, Nazir Rahman, Md. Mafuz Miah, Saiham Rabbi Shyam, Mir Kashem, Tabarok Reza, Anis Miah, Khasru Miah, Sk Abdul Ahad and Sajib Chowdhury. All of them are residents of different areas of Nasirnagar Upazila.

On October 30, 2016 bigots carried out arson attacks and vandalism on the homes and temples of Hindus in Nasirnagar upazila.

Sadhan Chandra Das, the then sub-inspector (SI) of Nasirnagar Police Station, filed the case. Sadhan, also investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the court accusing the 13 people.

Kamruzzaman Mamun, lawyer of the accused, said they will appeal against the verdict in the High Court.

Nazmul Hossain, additional public prosecutor of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, said the judgment was announced after a thorough analysis of evidences produced before the court.
