Fake Certificates: Sabrina challenges lower court verdict

Dr Sabrina Sharmin Hossain, chairperson of JKG Health Care, yesterday challenged the judgment of the lower court that sentenced her to 11 years' rigorous imprisonment in a case filed over issuing fake Covid-19 certificates.
The JKG's chairperson filed the appeal with the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka, Additional Public Prosecutor Tapash Kumar Pal told The Daily Star.
Sabrina also filed a petition, seeking bail in the case on grounds that she has been in jail since July 12, 2020.
Judge (in-charge) Syeda Hafsa Jhuma fixed September 15 for hearing on both the appeal and bail petition.
On August 23, Sabrina's husband Ariful Chowdhury, also the JKG's chief executive officer, challenged the judgment of the lower court that also sentenced him to 11 years' rigorous imprisonment on the same charges.
On July 19, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka sentenced Ariful, Sabrina and six others to 11 years' rigorous imprisonment.
According to the verdict, JKG Health Care was set up two months before the Directorate General of Health Services gave its approval of collecting samples to test for Covid-19 even though the organisation had no prior experience in this regard.
Violating all rules and regulations, it collected samples from people and supplied Covid-19 certificates without running tests.
